One of the sentimental things that
I wish I had not let get away
was Mama's sewing box.
Mama was a seamstress.
She loved sewing.
She loved quilting,
She'd find a dress that she liked
in the store and go home
and make her own pattern out of newspaper
or paper sacks from the grocery store.
She was thrifty and picked up every
button on the floor and cut off the
buttons from old shirts and coats.
Her sewing box was full of buttons.
I like finding old bottles or cards of buttons.
They make me think of Mama.
Bonnie:)
That is so sweet, Bonnie. I love old buttons and have lots of jars of them :)

ReplyDelete(ps I just noticed you had a "like, interesting etc" buttons.)
Beyond precious.
ReplyDeleteYeah, missing the mom here too. I so understand. I think most women sewed "back then"? My mom did, a little. My step-mom did. In fact, my step-mom, Myra, was a seamstress. I swear that woman could make or mend anything. So cool. I still have her old jar of buttons. They sit there. Unused. Missing their former owner like I do. God bless. ~:)
ReplyDeleteI wish I had my mom's collection of sewing things too.
ReplyDeleteGrandmother was a seamstress, and I love old buttons, spools of thread etc.
ReplyDeleteI love this post. I love the memories in a jar. So sweet!
ReplyDeleteI wish I had my MIL old button tin. She had so many nice old ones. My daughter makes bracelets out of buttons...so I got her some from my sister's yard sale. Blessings xoxo,Susie
ReplyDeleteI love old buttons and memories of the past. My grandmother had lots of buttons and I have a few of hers. Hugs, Diane
ReplyDeleteI love old buttons, too. They remind me of my grandma. When our granddaughters were here in April, we did a heirloom craft with their great-great-grandma's buttons!
ReplyDeleteI admire women like your mama, who can look at something in a store and go home and make their own pattern out of newspaper. I've always had to have everything mapped out for me...whether it be sewing or crocheting.
Thanks for sharing about your mama, Bonnie.
My Mom had one of those bottles too and I always loved playing with them. I have an old blue canning jar filled with buttons. I plan to put it somewhere in the gray room when I finish it.
ReplyDeleteI love old buttons, too, Bonnie, and have several from when I was a kid. LOVE that it reminds you of your Mom. xo Diana

I have an old aqua mason jar filled with buttons too. The button were purchased from an old fashioned fabric store near our cabin that sold them by the pound...just regular old buttons...but I loved the way they looked in that old jar. My mom had one of the drawers of her old treadle sewing machine filled with OLD buttons, ranging from very large to very small...some had rhinestone centers and very decorative. It was always so much fun going through them when I was little. Like you, I wish I had it in my possession....wonderful memories!!
ReplyDeleteI have my granny's scrap box and my grandmother's crochet bits. They are treasures.
ReplyDeleteMy sister got mothers button jar, and many of her quilts. When my sister died she had given then to her friends. Sad for me!
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful memories. I have a mason jar filled with vintage buttons and love it!
