Granny's Buttons

Buttons...

Granny always had them...

often tucked away in the drawers of her iron foot-pedaled sewing machine.

The flip down drawer in front contained her special buttons.

She kept buttons in her apron that she'd snipped from a worn out shirt or pair of trousers.

Buttons were always saved for new frocks for the 4 girls or shirts for the 3 boys.

Granny made every stitch of clothes she and her family wore even down to the underware.

Since blogging, I too have become fascinated with buttons.
A bottle of buttons can be quite costly.
I was lucky to find the one above for $1.
The cup contains buttons that I purchased on Etsy for a much greater sum!

A closer look reveals a combination of all different, shapes, sizes, and textures.

Decided to change up the little vignette that occupies the top shelf of my favorite display cabinet-the one my sweet brother-in-law found on the side of the road.

A little secret that would make my granny turn over in her grave...

I can't even sew on a button! Shhhhh.

Sisters by Chance, Friends by Choice

There are some things about my childhood that I'd like to forget
And probably more that my sister would like to forget!

Through the eyes of a child, my little sister was mama's baby and daddy's little girl.
I was jealous and I poked fun and prodded and ridiculed her to no end.
I had the "middle-child" syndrome bad-even on into my married, young-adult years.

My sister attended an out of state college when she graduated high school and never returned home to live until 20+ years later.
I remember saying to my parents, "Oh, Beverli's coming home. Let's roll out the red carpet."

I am ashamed now of my behavior.  I was ridiculously obnoxious!

The benefits of my sister's return home are many.

She returned after my kids were grown and gone and she had two little ones under foot.
Their presence filled the emptiness that my children left behind.
She became my best friend and the sister that I never let her be growing up.
She came back home when our parents' health began to fail.
Our friendship grew even deeper as we shared the load of caring for our aging parents.

People say we look alike. (This was taken 4 years ago)
(me, left)

It is by chance that we are sisters.
Now, we are friends by choice.

My saying is, "Friends come and go, but family is forever."

Shabby Chic

Yesterday, I had an unexpected blessing.

I had admired these two pieces of shabby chic in a friend's shop.
She popped in yesterday to browse.

"I have something for you."

Imagine my surprise and delight when she brought these in.

"For ME???"

I am mentally jumping up and down with hands in the air!

Isn't it pretty against my pink wall???
Can you hear my smile?

Oops.  A little crooked there!
But a great piece.

Thought for today:

"Give and it shall be given you, good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over."

Fabulous Flea Finds on a Saturday AM

Awoke with the dawn this morning.

Only 2 yard sales in town.

I had to work so no out-of-town fleas for me.

Going through the McDonald's Drive-In, I spotted the deal of the day,
Drop-leaf table and two chairs.
The old kind-great wood-partially sanded with three coats of color-red, forest green, and mint green.
Honestly!

Both tables and chairs were SOLID!

The dark green is U-G-L-Y, UGLY!
The picture doesn't reflect the true hideousness (a word?) of it!

See the red?  I guess this chair lacked the third coat of the uuuGLY green!
The set was $30-a little more than I like to pay.
I gave her a strange, give-me-a-break look.
She goes, "It's an antique."
Vintage-not antique, but I needed something to sell and a project.
We'll see what happens.

HUGE YARD SALE after McDonald's.
What I got for my $20:  Vera Bradley, I favor, bag (not the real thing, I discovered when I got to the shop),  large iron candelabra, small iron candelabra, 10 glass candle sticks in various sizes, hurricane vase with fall potpourri, 2 picture frames, 3 piece canister set, and I don't remember what else.  Took right on to the shop, cleaned and displayed.

Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees.
A vendor at The Shed next door was set up for a pre-opening Yard Sale.
Boy, Howdy!
The wares were not from his booth (thank goodness) although I do this on occasion when in desperation.  His neighbor's home was in foreclosure.  It was an invitation to "Help yourself to the barn."
I mean, who on earth has that kind of luck!
Crazy DUDE-instead of putting items in his booth and tripling the price, he has a yard sale.

10" crystal pitcher-HEEEEEAVY!
get this-ONE DOLLAR!!!

10" Blue Pottery Pitcher
ONE DOLLAR!

5" Crystal Creamer
$1

End-of-the-day Sale
25 cents on everything!!!

Bronze watering can, small marble globe, aqua candy tin, wooden plate with windmill and dutch man and woman.

Sold a chest for $75 today so I can justify the $54 spent.

Fabulous Fleas-A Fine Day!
