Cotton Fields Back Home

Growing up in rural Georgia,
there were always cotton fields.

We lived only a mile from town,
but there was a large cotton field behind our house.
We played in those fields, making a path
from our house to the neighbors.

Close to Thanksgiving, the cotton balls
were almost ready for pickin' and
the field behind our house,
looked as if it was covered in snow.

Mama said in her day that the cotton balls
had to get rotten before pickin'.
She loved cotton-pickin'.
I prefer already-picked cotton.

Like what you see in the galvanized bucket.

I'm feeling a bit nostalgic as the Holidays approach.
Missing my parents and home just a little bit.

Hope to touch base before Thanksgiving.
If not, Happy Thanksgiving.

Bonnie:)

  2. I like your cotton bouquet. I read a book this week about a seven year old boy who grew up picking cotton on his granddaddy's small Arkansas farm. It is a novel but seems realistic, "The Painted House" by John Grisham. Have you read it?

  3. Cotton fields were plentiful in Alabama too, not so much here in NY. I use to get sad and then my husband pointed out that we have never ever (exception, one time, and the last time) we had Thanksgiving with my family. Their doing, not mine...so, we have always had our own tradition...I cook, the guys clean up and whoever (friends/family) shows up, then that's fine too. I have since learned that my real family, no matter how sad that sounds, is my husband and son...and prayerfully, one day my son will have a family...and I know what kind of mil I want to be and prayerfully my dil and I will get along.

Blessings sweet friend...please know I am keeping you in prayer. It is a blessing to read how nostalgic you are...I sound bitter...and I do not like that about myself...Love you sweet friend.

  5. We have a lot of cotton fields around us! I have lived here in the same house in North Central Texas that I can remember when what is now the DFW airport was huge cotton fields! It was an ocean of white! Once in the late 60's we drove by there and I snitched a stem or two! I felt so guilty!

  7. We used to have a few cotton fields in the area but they have removed them all and put buildings up instead. Such a sad part of growth! I love the pieces you have! Blessings for this Thanksgiving and the days ahead! Cindy

  8. I have some real cotton blossoms in a bathroom. I received them years ago from a blog friend. They are so pretty and interesting. I can't imagine a whole field of them-must be stunning.

  10. Love the looks of that cotton as fall decor...such raw beauty. Your post reminded me of that old song I used to hear on the radio when I was a kid...

"When I was a little bitty baby my mama would rock me in that cradle,
In them old cotton field back home.
It was down in Louisiana just about a mile from Texarkana
In them old cotton fields back home.
Now when those cotton balls get rotten, you can't pick very much cotton
In them old cotton fields back home,
It was down in Louisiana, just about a mile from Texarkana,
In them old cotton fields back home

  11. My parents were from Oklahoma and didn't like picking cotton as it was backbreaking and mom said her hands were bloody every evening. I'm glad they came to CA before I was born.

  14. I saw cotton fields for the first time last year when my husband and I travelled through the delta! We have travelled extensively throughout the world but I swear I had never seen such a beautiful sight!
