Rebecca at A Gathering Place: A Tribute to Her Father and My Tribute to Mine

My heart is so full tonight.

I've been viewing
Rebecca Nelson's Tribute to her father
at A Gathering Place.

It is a heart-wrenching video
of the life of man who loved
His Father, His Faith and His Family.

Reminded me so much of my dad.
A Fisherman

A Fisher of Men

He loved his family.
(Like Rebecca I have my hand on his shoulder)

His sweetheart for 59 years.
They lacked one month making 60.

Mama went first
and Daddy was gone six months later.
I can already see that far away look in his eyes.

He loved his God.

He loved people.

He loved their babies.

He started out as just a young preacher boy of 17,

and 60+ years later his legacy continues.

In the video Stronger,
Angela Thomas tells a story of Charles Spurgeon
and his preacher grandfather.

Charles who is to speak was a little late for the service
and his grandfather starts preaching.
Charles comes in and his grandfather insists that he preach.

As Charles is preaching his grandfather,
prods him on saying,
"Tell 'em again, Charles,
Tell 'em again, Charles,
Tell 'em about God' grace."

With tears streaming down my face,
I could hear my daddy saying,
"Tell 'em again, Bonnie,
Tell 'em again, Bonnie,
Tell 'em about God's grace.

Rebecca was a Nazarene PK.
There were four children
and she was the second girl.
We've shared our stories of growing up
in a strict evangelical home,
but we also share the love of our father.

The anniversary of Daddy's death is this month
March 12, 2011
and my brother Brian
March 23, 1975.

Rebecca, my prayers are with you, my sweet friend.

Be good to yourself.
Allow yourself time to grieve.
Grief is different for us all.
God is faithful.

  1. Oh, yes- I watched the video over at Rebecca's with tears streaming down my face-loving her dad-a man I knew only through her blog. God bless them and God bless you. It is hard when we are the "last" generation and our parents have gone home ahead of us-xo Diana

  2. This is such a nice tribute to your Dad. You and Rebecca have a lot in common.

  3. I join you in your grief for our fathers, my friend...
It is physically painful, isn't it?
This is a beautiful tribute, my friend...
And like you, in my favorite picture of my daddy, I have my hand on his shoulder.

  4. Awe..how precious. Your brother passed on --on my birthday. What a lovely tribute..what a lovely post. Blessings

  5. Oh, this is so touching. We never know how much time we'll have with our loved ones. I lost my Dad when I was 25 (and my brother when I was 21) The photos of your family are so touching; what a long love story your parents had. Such a gift!

  6. Bonnie, I feel for you and certainly Rebecca. Losing our parents was so hard. We feel like orphans no matter how old we are. Your father was a wonderful man. Blessings to you, xoxo,Susie

  7. Dear Bon...what a precious post today. I've sobbed on and off all day as this was the first day I've spent alone since my daddy's passing. I'm so grateful and thankful for the love of a Godly parent and for the sacrifices he made in my behalf.

We have another thing in common...our father's are in heaven. Tonight I'm going to tell my daddy to find your daddy. No doubt they have much to share with one another.

    I believe it will happen.

Love to you...you are such a special friend.

  8. Oh dear Bonnie, sweet and precious memories are forever in our hearts! Your Daddy, My Daddy and Rebecca's Daddy, waiting for us in Heaven! BIG HUGS and tears shared with you!

  9. Those are nice tributes. I'm sad your Dad is gone. It must be nice to have parents that are worth admiring. I wish I could have met him. At least he'll be one of those sweet faces I get to see when I'm in Heaven! Luv ~:)

  10. What a beautiful post and a beautiful way to remember you father :) Prayers and hugs.

  11. I like Theresa's comment....our loved ones are waiting for us in Heaven. So thankful for that peace! God bless you especially this month, Bonnie.
I just read your newer post, too. I am so happy that our paths crossed and that my blog sisters are now yours too. God works in amazing ways. What a blessing to share our happy and sad times with one another.
Congrats on your 200 followers and I know one lucky reader will be thrilled with your lovely pink dish. Lots of love, M

  12. What a wonderful tribute.
You both were very blessed with wonderful dads.
    Woolie Blessings & Hugs
